A fan-making workshop using Nebuta dyes and techniques was held on July 25th and 26th at Hirota Shrine (Nagashima, Aomori City).

A project by Tsukuridas, a design company in Aomori City that produces the shrine's wax stamps and lanterns in the precincts. Takeshi Chiba, the president of the company, and Yuya Kudo, a graphic designer and Nebuta artist, guided the process.

The mount on which the face of the goldfish Nebuta is drawn is made by drawing the design with a brush, making a woodblock print, and printing it on washi paper one by one. Kudo says, "Printing might have been fine, but I wanted to make it a handiwork by making it with a print."

Participants will experience painting the areas that are not dyed in wax and coloring the nebuta with dyes. While learning techniques such as “blurring” and “blurring,” he added the color of his choice and completed the one and only fan in the world. A woman in her 70s who experienced it said with a smile, "It's special to be able to spend the summer with a fan you made yourself. I want to make one again next year."

Chiba said, "It will be a new entrance to experience nebuta, so it will be a more enjoyable memory. I want to hold it again next year so that it will be a regular summer event."
