It has been revealed that a graduate student at Hirosaki University (Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture) designed the package for ``Gotochi PREMIUM Aomori Gummy Kaoru Orin'' released this month by UHA Mikakuto (Chuo Ward, Osaka City). The university announced this on its website on October 16th.

The concept of ``Gotochi PREMIUM'' is to ``deliver the deliciousness of fruits from all over Japan in gummy candy'', and the packaging will be developed through collaboration between industry, academia, and government, including recruiting students from the local area. In the Tohoku region, it has also been deployed in Yamagata and Fukushima in the past.

At the request of UHA Mikakuto, the university solicited design ideas from 35 students as part of a class taught by Associate Professor Mitsuteru Sato of the Faculty of Education's Design Laboratory. Last October, the company explained the product concept and held tastings. Designs were then solicited.

Tae Sato, a second-year graduate student whose design was accepted, said, ``I had a hard time deciding on the design image. At the time, I was working as a tutor for an apple farmer, so I had the opportunity to receive apples, and I also wanted to eat ``Orin.'' '', and the image was set,'' he says.

Associate Professor Sato says, ``The key points for this selection were the regional characteristics that incorporated Neputa painting techniques, and the dynamic design that was not found in other students' works.'' Not only the design, but also the product name ``Aomori Gummy Kaoru Orin'' was Mr. Sato's idea.

Sales began at convenience stores and other stores across the country, and Mr. Sato said he received calls from family and friends living in Hokkaido, Tokyo, and other places saying they had bought it. Mr. Sato said, ``I had the opportunity to go on a trip to Okinawa, and I was able to see products that I designed at a convenience store there.I was grateful for this valuable experience, and at the same time, I felt a strange feeling.'' Manufacturer's suggested retail price is 138 yen.
