The live squid race event "Original Squid Race" will be held on July 29th at the "Shimofuro Fishing Port Special Venue" in Kazamaura Village, Aomori.

The Ganso Squid Race is a race in which live squid caught off the coast of the Tsugaru Strait are made to swim in a tank consisting of a dedicated 20-meter course. Participants poke the squid with sticks and compete to be the first to arrive. In addition to the continuing poor catch of squid, it has become difficult to hold regular events, and due to the corona crisis, it was not possible to hold the event from 2020 to 2022.

The “Original Squid Race” will also be held in conjunction with the “Yukaimura Seafood Donburi Festival” held on the same day. For the first time in four years, we introduced a voting system using smartphones as a new initiative. By reading the QR code installed at the venue, you can vote for the squid ranking with your smartphone. Voting is only for visitors, and prizes will be prepared for those who win the first and second places.

At the "Donburi Festival", in addition to the "Squid Race", there are plans to open 9 restaurants, including local restaurants and izakayas. There will also be a reconstruction live performance by the female vocal unit "Rice Ball" and a fireworks display, and the squid race will be streamed live on the official YouTube channel of Yukai Village.

A member of the executive committee, Mr. Yusei Kimura of the Kazamaura Village Office Industrial Construction Division, said, "Although the squid catch is still poor, we decided to hold the event this time. Local delicacies and specialty products will be sold at the venue, so please come and enjoy the Shimoburo."

The squid race is held from 11:00 and 15:00.
