The Tsuru-no-Mai Bridge (Tsuruta-cho, Kitatsugaru-gun, Aomori Prefecture) will undergo major renovation work starting September 1st for four years.

Tsuru-no-Mai Bridge is a triple arched bridge with a total length of about 300 meters over Tsugaru Fujimi Lake in Tsuruta Town, Aomori Prefecture. It was made of wood using cypress from Aomori Prefecture, and was put into service in 1994. Actress Sayuri Yoshinaga appeared in the advertisement of JR East's "Otona no Kyujitsu Club", and now it is playing a role in attracting tourists as a symbol of Tsuruta Village.

After nearly 30 years, damage and defects in the wood began to appear in the repair work, so the bridge piers were reinforced and the floorboards were replaced. It is said that cedar wood will be used due to budget and procurement considerations. Construction will begin on September 1, 2023, and will be completed in three stages until March 31, 2026.

The first phase of construction is a bridge to the stage on the Fujimi Lake Park side, and the period is until March 31, 2024. The second phase of construction is the bridge between the stages, and the period is from September 1, 2024 to March 31, 2025. The third phase of construction will be from September 1, 2025 to March 31, 2026, up to the stage on the Japanese Crane Nature Park side.

During the construction period, Tsugaru Fujimi Lake will be drained, heavy equipment will be installed, and scaffolding will be set up in the construction area. It is possible to visit the bridge, but it will be completely closed to traffic during the construction period. Scaffolding will be set up on the Fujimi Lake Park side so that construction work can be observed. All roads are open to traffic outside of the construction period.

Since Tsugaru Fujimi Lake is the source of irrigation water, the construction work will be divided into three periods in order to secure water for agricultural work, considering the balance with local agriculture. A person in charge of Tsuruta Town said, "We are planning events during the construction period, and we are preparing a special plan that takes advantage of the construction period. We would appreciate your understanding and cooperation in the construction of Tsuru-no-Mai Bridge, which utilizes wood, so that it can be preserved for future generations."
