A special exhibition "Understanding Disasters" is currently being held at the Takaoka no Mori Historical Museum (Takaoka, Hirosaki City, TEL 0172-83-3110).

Approximately 40 materials will be exhibited on the theme of disasters such as famine, earthquakes, and epidemics that occurred in the Tsugaru area during the Edo period. According to the curator Yuko Shibuya, who planned the exhibition, there was a special exhibition about famine in the past, but it is the first one with the theme of disaster. “Next year will be the 10th anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake. We planned to raise awareness of disaster mitigation and disaster prevention as much as possible,” says Shibuya.

Materials were exhibited by theme, the eruption of Mt. Iwaki was taken up in the eruption corner, and a map and a rubbing book showing the location of the memorial tower in the Tsugaru area were prepared for the exhibition in the famine corner. In the epidemic epidemic corner, materials on epidemics such as smallpox, which occurred twice in the Edo period, will be released. Mr. Shibuya said, "There was a spread of the new coronavirus infection during preparations, and I could understand the severe situation at that time."

In the lobby, a panel is set up to introduce the disasters that occurred in the Taisho and Showa eras. In addition to taking up the Iwakiyama Hyakusawa debris flow disaster that occurred in 1975 (Showa 50), we will also introduce the great fire of Tomita in the Taisho era and the flooding of the Iwaki River in the Showa era.

Mr. Shibuya calls for the visit, saying, "You can shoot freely in the hall. Please come and take measures against infectious diseases."

Opening hours are from 9:30 to 16:30. The admission fee is 300 yen for the general public, 150 yen for high school / university, and 100 yen for elementary and junior high school. Closed on the 3rd Monday. Until December 20th.
