Aomori Prefecture has the 44th lowest "car suspension rate on pedestrian crossings without traffic lights" in Japan, according to a JAF (Japan Automobile Federation) survey release document on October 25.

JAF surveyed the temporary stop status of vehicles passing through two traffic lightless pedestrian crossings in Aomori prefecture from August 15th to September 13th, 2018. As a result, the suspension rate was 2.1%, which was the 44th lowest in Japan, along with Tokyo. The national average was 8.6%, and Nagano Prefecture was No. 1 at 58.6%.

Mr. Noriyuki Fukui, an "Aomori smart driver," who works to reduce traffic accidents through communication and compassion among drivers, says that he needs "more caring driving."

According to Mr. Fukui, the reason why he decided to participate in the Aomori smart driver initiative was that students from outside the prefecture said, "Many drivers do not stop at the pedestrian crossing." “I would like to continue to educate people that the attitude of giving up on driving is important because it can lead to the image of the city,” he said.
