On July 20th, 25 6th grade students from Arakawa Elementary School (Arakawa Shibata) experienced making Jomon pottery and smoking at the Aomori City Komakino Ruins Preservation Center (Nozawazawabu, Aomori City).

The event was held in three parts as part of the Maritime Science Museum "Museum Support for Learning about the Sea". First, Kosei Goto, deputy director of the Aomori City Komakino Ruins Preservation Center, gave an orientation, where the participants learned about the Komakino Ruins stone circle and changes in the design of pottery from the beginning of the Jomon period to the late Jomon period.

In the next fire making experience, teams of 4 to 5 people were divided into 6 groups and experienced the "Maigiri ceremony". The children worked together by naturally dividing the roles of the fire-starter and the cheerleader. Within the time limit of 30 minutes, 3 of the 6 teams succeeded in starting the fire.

Finally, make Jomon pottery. Some children struggled because they were not good at handling clay, but there were many children who created original pottery with free ideas.

Mr. Goto, who served as a lecturer, said, "I was happy to hear the children say, 'Jomon people are amazing' during the experience, and I thought that the Jomon people's way of life and the wonderful skills of the Jomon people could be noticed even a little." and smiled.
