Some Shinkai works are set in Aomori. "The other side of the clouds, the promised place" is a near future science fiction depicting a boy and a girl aiming for a huge tower built in Hokkaido. The facilities and areas along the JR Tsugaru Line, especially the areas around Homoda Station and Kamita Station, are used as models for the stage under construction, and there are some places that have appeared in the play as they are.

Director Shinkai commented on Twitter as to why he chose this place, "I traveled a few times when I was a student and thought that Tohoku and Aomori were quiet and beautiful places."
