Takateru Shrine in Hirosaki (Takaoka Jinmano, Hirosaki City), which was hit by heavy snow, is currently looking for people to help with snow removal on January 12th.

Takateru Shrine is a nationally designated important cultural property that was built in 1712 (Shotoku 2) as the mausoleum of Tsugaru Nobumasa, the fourth lord of the Hirosaki domain. It is owned and managed by a local neighborhood association of 48 households in the Takaoka village, but in 2023, in an effort to gain cooperation from outside the area, the Takateru Shrine Management Review Committee was established and is currently recruiting people to help with maintenance and management.

According to the committee's chairman, Shuzo Kasai, the neighborhood association's members have been aging in recent years, making it difficult to maintain the shrine, such as mowing the grass and clearing the snow. The committee is currently preparing for repair work to begin in 2026, and is calling for people to join the committee. Starting in February, the committee will begin raising funds for the shrine building repairs through crowdfunding.

Activities on January 12th will focus on clearing snow from the worship hall and other areas around the temple grounds. The event will start at 8:00 and run from 10:30 to 11:00. You can join midway through, and snow removal tools will be available for rental.

Kasai said, "We cleared the snow from the temple grounds on December 29th of last year, but there has been a lot of snow this winter and we can't keep up. We will need the help of many people to preserve these important cultural properties for future generations. I hope this will be an opportunity for people to learn about the current status of the important cultural properties in Hirosaki."
