An igloo made from snow blocks was completed on December 27th at Sukayu Onsen Ryokan (Arakawa Minami Arakawayama, Aomori City, tel 017-738-6400 ).

An "igloo" is a temporary dwelling made from snow blocks by the Inuit people who live in the Arctic Circle in northern Canada. The Sukayu Onsen Ryokan started building igloos in 2019 with Professor Toyoshi Sasaki of Aomori University, and holds an "Igloo Meister Course" every year to train people who can build igloos.

About 10 people participated in this year's Igloo Meister course. They started building igloos on December 22. They cut the packed snow into 30-40cm pieces and piled them up in a spiral shape, building two igloos with an inner diameter of 4-5m this year and connecting the two together.

According to Shintaro Takada, a member of the sales planning department at Sukayu Onsen Ryokan, in 2022 the inside of the igloo was transformed into a teahouse called "Juhyo-an" where matcha tea was served. Tourists have also enjoyed it as a cafe and bar, and this time the cafe and bar will serve coffee, amazake and other drinks from January 6th.

Professor Sasaki says, "Aomori, and especially Sukayu, has world-class snowfall and is a suitable place for building igloos. We would like to promote this as a new tourist attraction for Aomori as the 'Igloo Kingdom.'"
