Classic car and vintage bike drag race to be held for the last time in Aomori
The "Feels Good Exhaust THE FINAL" drag racing event for classic cars and vintage bikes will be held on September 8th at Aomori Speed Park (Komagome Fukazawa, Aomori City).
This event sees classic cars and bi-vintage bikes manufactured up until 1985 race around a 1/10 mile (approximately 160m) straight course three times, competing for the fastest time to reach the finish line. In addition to the race, there will also be food trucks selling food, an apparel and second-hand clothing corner, a children's corner with balloon art and a festival, and a live rock band.
Kota Kimiaki, chairman of the executive committee, said, "The first time we held the tournament, it was just for our friends, but last year we held it for the first time with customers in attendance, and we were surprised to see it attract more than we expected, about 1,000 people. This year is the third year, and we would like to mark it as a turning point and see it through to the end."
The number of entries for the race is 72 in total: 31 in the four-wheel class, 17 in the two-wheel hand clutch class, and 24 in the two-wheel foot clutch class. Genta Sato, the chairman of the event, said, "We will be participating in 22 more races than last year. The spectacular sight of so many classic cars and vintage bikes lined up in a row is also a highlight. I hope everyone will enjoy the exhaust sound as they all start their engines at the same time."
This year's event will be the first of its kind, titled the "Aomori Fist Festival," and will also feature a display of motorcycles equipped with Harley-Davidson's "Knucklehead" engines, manufactured between 1936 and 1947. The rugged cylinder head resembles a clenched fist, hence the nickname "Knucklehead," and the beauty of its design has earned it many fans. "Knuckleheads are highly prized and are the envy of vintage motorcycle enthusiasts. We plan to display around eight Harleys. It should be a rare opportunity that can only be found at this event," says Sato.
The event will also feature a "kids tug-of-war" event that children can participate in. It's a surprise event where the opponent is not revealed until the day of the event, and last year 50 children competed against a 10-ton dump truck. This year will be the same, with "the opponent being a surprise until the day of the event." Up to 30 people can participate, and registration will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis from 8:00 to 11:30 on the day of the event.
Sato said, "I want to make this an event that is created by everyone at the venue. We are preparing it so that anyone can come and enjoy themselves, not just classic car fans. Since this is the final, I hope that many people will come and have fun."
The event will be held from 8:00 to 15:00. Admission is 500 yen (free for those under 18). The event will be held rain or shine.
